Passignano sul Trasimeno

One of the most popular tourist destinations of Lake Trasimeno, Passignano sul Trasimeno stands on a promontory over the lake at roughly 300 metres above sea level.

Once a much-contended military outpost on account of its strategic position, the modern town still retains much of its original fortifications. Visitors can see the ruins of the old fortress, the bridge that led into the castle and the 14th century triangular Ponente Tower.

The main ferry lines that connect the islands in the middle of Lake Trasimene with the mainland all leave from Passignano, which is therefore well connected to the nearby Isola Maggiore.

Looking out towards the lake from the parish church, visitors can turn right into the old town centre and walk uphill to the Church of San Bernardino, whose facade dates back to 1573.

In the uppermost point of the town are the ruins of the ancient Rocca, with its Medieval houses.

Outside the town stands the Sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Oliveto, built in 1582 to designs that have been attributed to Mariotto Radi. The interior contains works by Ascanio da Cortona, Salvio Savini, Mariotto Radi, Benedetto Bandiera and other artists.

Along the road that leads from Passignano sul Trasimeno to Tuoro sul Trasimeno, past the Montigeto hill, lies the valley that is dissected lengthwise by the long drive of Villa del Pischiello, the large house and farm built by Ugaccione di Bourbon-Sorbello in 1799. The estate of the Relais Borgo Torale stretches to include part of this hill.

Up above there are still the remains of the hamlet of Bastia Corgna, which was the earliest seat of the Della Corgna family. Even further up is the leaning tower of the Castle of Vernazzano.

The jetty of Passignano sul Trasimeno is just 50 metres from the old town centre, with the well equipped beach of Passignano just half a kilometre down the road, offering healthy relaxation to tourists from May through to September.

Tuoro sul Trasimeno, which also boasts a fully equipped beach open from May through to September, as well as a jetty, is just 4 kilometres down the road. Here it is possible to rent beach umbrellas a beds for sunbathing, as well as a variety of equipment for water sports. There is also a lifesaving service.
