Itineraries & Lake Trasimeno
The Lake Trasimeno area has been for centuries a strategically important dividing line between the cities of Perugia, Arezzo and Orvieto, and then between the regions of Umbria and Tuscany. But these lands have also played an important role in the economy of this part of Italy on account of the fishing, the rich farmland and, in recent years, the flourishing tourist industry.
The fortifications of the towns and villages of this area, with watch towers that date back to the Middle Ages, are in fact still visible to visitors today.
Tourists to this part of Italy will find they have abundant excursions and itineraries to choose from.
Paciano, Panicale, Magione and Tuoro sul Trasimeno on the hills surrounding the lake, and Castiglione del Lago and Passignano sul Trasimeno down by the water, have been the organisational centres of this area since 1200.
A number of Castles and fortified hamlets lie to the WEST at Castiglione del Lago and to the NORTH of Tuoro sul Trasimeno with the fortresses of Borghetto, Montegualandro, Vernazzano and Passignano itself. To the EAST there are the fortifications of Monte Ruffiano, the towers of Fiume and Castel Rigone and – towards Magione - the castles of Montecolognola, Zocco, San Feliciano, San Savino, la Frusta and Sant'Arcangelo sul Lago. To the SOUTH there are the castles of Montemelino, Montesperello and Agello.
