Hotels in Italy are classified by stars as in the rest of Europe. There are five official categories of hotels from the most expensive luxury 5-star hotels to the cheapest and simplest 1-star hotels.
Charges vary according to class, season, services available, and location. In all hotels service charges are included in the rates. The total charge is exhibited on the back of the door of the hotel room. Breakfast is by law an optional extra charge, although a lot of hotels try to include it in the price of the room. When booking a room, always specify if you want breakfast or not. Hotels are now obliged by law (for tax purposes) to issue an official receipt to customers: you should not leave the premises without this document.
